Frequently Asked Questions
Question:
How can you compare a reading taken with an ESD field meter with units of kV/inch with a reading taken with the Novx meter with units in Volts? When we measure we get different values. Which is more accurate and reliable and why?
Answer:
As you know the Novx meter is able to make measurements using both proximity and contact methods. The proximity method is a very relative type of reading and is not intended to be used for accurate readings. The contact method (which I am sure is the intent of the question) provides accurate readings. The field meter method has several problems relating to accuracy.
The unit operates on a field principal rather than direct contact readings. The field, and therefore the reading, varies with the distance from the meter to the field source. The source must be a flat homogeneous surface perpendicular to the meter. The field is and integration of the entire "spot" being measured.
For these reasons we feel it is obvious the contact measurement is more accurate and reliable.
