Question:
When we measured a static charge the peak voltage stayed at a certain value, but the real time voltage value never went back up to the peak value. Is it possible we are disturbing the static charge and causing it to dissipate? What would cause this discrepancy?
Answer:
Taking a measurement does in fact disturb the static charge, however the meter's input impedance is in excess of 100 Gohm and we are able to measure voltages in contact mode on an insulator such as Teflon and other plastics! Here is where the peak hold is most useful.
When contact is made, a small current flows into (or out of) the instrument indicating a given voltage level. The peak hold circuits capture the initial peak voltage level. Depending on the quantity of charge available, the real time indication may slowly drop as the charge is drained offnote this effect is more pronounced when measuring charge on an insulator or very small conductors.
