Is the hardware/system designed as "open architecture"?

Answer:

Yes, the DART's are designed to be flexible with 8 auxiliary I/Os. These are available on a 10-pin modular expansion connector which includes: two ±5 volt analog voltage inputs, two ±5 volt analog voltages outputs, two TTL inputs, and two TTL outputs.
